Casa en Mérida, Yucatán

(scroll down for english)

Soon we will collaborate in a residential project in “La Rejoyada”, Mexico, the intention of the project is to produce a relationship between vernacular and modern architecture.

Building with earth offers the possibility of using methods that enhance our architecture. Many sectors in architecture are still unaware of the benefits of unconventional methods, while other sectors are exploiting these methods as a “branding” for a sustainable architecture.

Earth, however, as a building material has attributes that go beyond the ecological ones. On the social and economic aspect, increasing the use of natural materials allow people to take advantage of a resource that is virtually under their feet: soil. Another feature: thermal capacity, is usually underestimated. It is well known that earth functions as a material that regulates the temperature of an environment and improves the air quality – healthy spaces.

earthLAB started as an exploration towards discovering and pushing the limits of earth as a building material. As a group of architects, engineers and designers with the aim of developing earth building technologies, earthLAB organizes workshops in Sweden where participants and users are introduced into the basics of rammed earth, develops design and helps those interested realize their projects.

Hopefully the project in “La Rejoyada” will work as a bridge between tradition and technology, promoting at the same time the aesthetic, environmental, social and economic credentials of an architecture made from earth.

The pallet project

20150614_215433

Three weeks ago we did not had any furniture in our apartment, trying to find ideas about how to re-furnish our flat we decided to bring a few pallets and start making our own things. We found a lot of inspiration on the web, and with the help of our friends we made some cool stuff, in this post I share some of those things we made.

San Gerónimo House

San Gerónimo is a work I did this as a freelance in Mexico. I didn´t see it finished because I moved to Sweden, but my friend Nora sent me some nice photos she took. My family wanted to build an apartment they could rent to a couple … probably to have some company 😉 This is the house before renovation.

FOTOCASAc

I wanted to re-discover the façade of the house and use its existing structure; the vegetation had a severe plague and had to be removed in order to plant again. The house is located on a hill that enhances panoramic views towards the city.BocetosWhat I liked the most of this experience is not the final result, but the process of dealing with so many persons at a time. Sometimes it was like being in the middle of a storm, but most of the time was a joyful and rewarding happening. It was nice to hear “ahí viene el arqui!” 🙂

Contractors

Now that I see the project finished I would have made some changes here and there, and lets do not talk about the not so ecological friendly materials we used. Eventhough I tried to use passive design I didn´t know anything about earth by then …
